Made For

  • CEN4722 User Experience Design (UF)
With a few user-friendly exceptions like enemies and important levers, things can only be SEEN if they are being HEARD. Every player action like stepping or jumping produces particle soundwaves that bounce off objects around you; you can also send out a concentrated soundwave for surveillance. Sometimes obstacles take different shapes and forms - here, you have to dodge the big Stepper and find a way to stop the little girl from crying.

About the Project

The Echoic Reverie is a 2D platformer about seeing through sound: interpreting the world audiably rather than visually, and listening to the 'chorus of the mundane.' This strange dreamscape of a carnival was made to provide a unique and understandable user experience to the player for our final project in UX Design. I was largely responsible for the game's design as well as programming its sound-responsive environment and soundscape.

This is one of my personal favorites - it's so aesthetically wonderful, fun to interact with, and weird. It tells a complete, if small, story in the 5 minutes of game there are to play.

Programming Accomplishments

  • Created and programmatically integrated particle systems that visually and functionally act as soundwaves to reveal parts of the environment
  • Programmed the interactive audio elements, platforms, and props within the environment

Other Accomplishments

  • Created all sprites for the game, including player, enemies, and environment
  • Lead the design process and prototyping that formed the foundation of the game's features and aesthetic
